A Wal-Mart spokeswoman confirmed today that the two Chinese brands of dog treats pulled from shelves last month contain trace amounts of melamine, a chemical found in fertilizer.

Wal-Mart had quietly removed from shelves on July 26, 2007, Chicken Jerky of Shanghai Bestro Trading, and Chicken Jerky Strips of Import-Pingyang Pet Product Co., after customers had complained that their pets were becoming ill from eating the dog treats. According to company spokeswoman Deisha Galberth, the giant retailer then initiated internal testing to verify if any problems indeed existed, but no formal product recalls were announced by the FDA.

A company spokeswoman said that more testing had been done in order to confirm the viability of these products on Wal-Mart's shelves. After that, Wal-Mart could then either undertake a voluntary recall along with the FDA, or restock the product if tests cleared the two brands of any impurities.

If you have any of these dog treats at home, do not feed them to your pets. There have been reports that one dog died from consuming the jerky treats.
